What Causes Fibromyalgia & CHRONIC FATIGUE?

Both conditions fall under the same umbrella in terms of causation but manifest at two ends of the spectrum, one end being fatigue and the other end being pain. Many patients fall somewhere in the middle of this spectrum.

Research points toward both conditions being caused by an abnormality in the brain, specifically around two structures, the “amygdala” and the “insula”.

The amygdala is the part of our brain that is responsible for the “fight or flight” response, or the stress response. It is also known as the response of the sympathetic nervous system to threats. Research indicates that this part of the brain gets stuck in a chronic state of hyper-arousal, causing an over-production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. It's this over-production of stress hormones that is responsible for many of the symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (M.E.).
